Nikolai Khizhnyak (b. 1989) is keenly interested in raising social awareness and chronicling political conflict through his photography and photojournalism, having shot on location in the North Caucasus, Russia, and Ukraine covering the war there. His photos have been published in Gazeta.ru, Russian Reporter (Russky Reporter), Takie dela, Meduza, Ugopolis, Kommersant, The New Times, Smart News, Uga.ru, and ITAR-TASS. He was a staff photographer for the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper and currently works for Rossiya Segodnya. Khizhnyak was a winner of the 2016 Russia Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest.
